Match Report Burnham 2s V Hornets.18 Oct 14
Burnham 2s 28 Hornets 17.
“Burnham’s precision rugby removes the sting from Hornets
Burnham played host to a strong Hornets side who flew into the BASC with a strong squad. Clearly the visitors were still buzzing about their high scoring event of the previous week.
Burnham on the other hand were in denial as to the lack of response from their previous run out; an exhaustive call up had been initiated to ensure we had a powerful unit to make amends.
A comprehensive squad turned out to commence the build up to the game; it was a more focused approach which on experience always pays off as a more motivated attitude to the game is installed.
With the brief from the official the game got underway from the start it was plain to see that Hornets had fielded a comprehensive unit; they still had the meat in the forwards but the backs looked like they could be dangerous.
And they were; the Hornets got out of the blocks at pace and were soon putting Burnham under pressure as was anticipated they were playing off the back row and the two centres. The link was good with the inside centre delivering precision hits into the back defence and feeding the outside centre who had pace in abundance; so much so that this combination had Burnham reeling by putting 17 Points on within twenty minutes. Two tries from the centres and one from the wing.
Burnham’s reply to this was slow; some good moves created space and the Forwards were organising themselves well as a moving maul; and were dominate in the air; but minor handling errors was spoiling the finishing this added to the frustration of the Burnham side.
Hornets were working well; linking both forwards and backs; had it not been for some determined defending and suppression; Hornets would have racked up their lead. Organisation and control was the key; this was executed by Stuart Blake and Matt Slater; the efforts of Matt Frear; Maca; Glenn Cutter and Sam Weekes are also worthy of mention.
It finally came together when a good move brought about by intelligent tactical kicking from Wills Conway opened a gap on the left wing which brought Massie Shaw in to feed Elliot Donnelley to filter round the opposition wing to get the score; under the posts; try; and conversation; account opened; half time.
Analysis of the half brought about a change of strategy, clearly containment had to be a matter of priority; and shut down the danger in the Hornets back row; the forwards were beginning to exercise dominance as the Hornets pack were tiring; both side were making intelligent use of subs.
As the second half started it was a focused Burnham side that lined up. Wills Conway started placing inch perfect kicks into the Hornets 22 with the accuracy of a cruise missile; the effect was that Hornets were always playing of the back foot; swift follow up by the forwards especially Maca, Frear, Slater and Cutter were disrupting recovery and good organisation by Matt Mitchell was gelling the unit into a powerful force, all this paid off when Blakey broke out and placed the ball down under the posts, Conway converted there was no looking back; as the half developed this tactic had Hornets pinned down and despite some good opportunities the containment of the danger men was complete.
It was not to long that again; effort paid off from a ruck in the visitors 22 and on spotting an opportunity Maca broke out and crossed the line under the uprights.
This took the home side into the lead; close; and with Hornets still dangerous with no room for compliancy. Burnham’s nerve held the composure was confident; more of the same was dished out to a reeling Hornets who were trying hard to come to terms with what had hit them in the second half. The icing on the cake was left to Alex Watkins to seal the bid with a try in the closing stages of the game.
Analysis; this was yet again a very credible performance the strength of this can be drawn from;
A positive build up to the game ensured that all players were focused on what was required;
Organisation and control; this was adeptly managed by the Captain and others;
Self-discipline crucial in this game; was obvious; and exercised by all;
The belief in ones self; that despite being 17 Point down that the game was winnable;
Playing as a unit with the support and encouragement to each other;
Result victory. Momentum resumed!
Next week we travel; the calling notice is already out; this is the area that we need to patch up; there is no point in winning all the home games; we must succeed away from home also.
Taunton are struggling in the league but there is no place for compliancy; any team can turn it on at home; we need yet again a strong squad to maintain this momentum.
Be there.
Watch out for the move and form up details.
