Burnham 2s 42 Whitingdon 12
“Burnham stretch the legs of the Litchfield men”
Burnham 2s entertained Whitington RFC a touring side from Litchfield on Sat; this was a welcome fixture as there was a gap on the fixture list enabling the 2s to maintain the momentum leading into the side’s last game of the season on 12 April.
Burnham had mustered a good squad for this encounter; and as is the case with any touring side the game was to be taken seriously; due to other commitments some players were out of position but nevertheless all were 2s pool and therefore were familiar with the requirement. An early kick off had been organised to enable support for the first XV game against Penryn.
The game got off on time and saw Burnham exert early pressure on the visitors; to state Burnham were eager was an understatement; the backs were geared up to go and started to make opportunities early on. It was not to long before Mason grabbed his chance from a feed from Matt Love he bulldozed his way over the line to open the scoring; converted by Will Conway. The visitors came back hard using their superior weight in the forwards the consolidated four phase play allowed their no 10 to kick deep; this was collected by Matt Mitchell at full back who sent the ball high and deep back to the opposition supported by a swift follow up and collection due to a favourable bounce saw Matt find the line; a fine individual try converted by Conway.
Jake Allen was to add to the total before half time and as the half drew to a close the visitors crossed the line through a fine forwards move.
Changes were made to the side as the game resumed and Burnham got down to much of the same. The visitors had revived themselves somewhat and started off well building on the success experienced at the end of the first half; it was Matt Love who broke the dead lock and broke out from the centre to cut the opposition in half and score under the uprights.
The reply from Whitingdon was swift; following a good carry by their no 4 they made good ground up field which culminated in their no 8 crossing the line a fine effort unconverted.
Burnham were far from finished and fine tries from Donnelly; Nash and Matt Slater finished off a good day at the office.
This was a welcome respite from League duty and was a worthwhile run out, the 2s again demonstrated that they can put it together when required; the game was played in true rugby mode with both teams leaving the field in amicable spirits.
It is back to work next week as the 2s travel to Wiveliscombe for their final game of the season; this will be our final challenge of the season and one where only a win is acceptable this will consolidate our position in the league. A full squad is required to be in attendance.
A social withdrawal is planned for the move back to Burnham for all those travelling on the bus; Will Conway is to plan this withdrawal taking into consideration as many oasis stops as possible.
Please make yourself available for this game; names to Charlotte when prompted; training for those who can make it normal times.
The man of the match was without a doubt; Ben Gibb but so many credible performances were put in mainly Chris Warner; Ben Bowket; George Wilcox; Ginge; Lee Berry and many more.
The loss in this victory is the fact that it should have been shared by a lot more of the 2s squad; commitment is needed for all games; the result could have been so different. The seconds have no game next week. The next outing is away to Ivel Barbarians 02 Mar it is imperative that all make a consolidated effort to be available for this and all remaining games left on the fixture card.
