Burnham succumbed to another defeat this weekned to the hands of bridgwater in the first round of the somerset cup.

For the 7th week running burnham lost yet again because of bad tackling and lacklusture attack. 3 of bridgwater’s tries were some of the softest seen at the basc for a few years and if you take these away the scoreline is alot different and the confidence going into the next game would of been higher, but as of previous weeks the same lesson is not being learnt.

The game was won for bridgwater in the first 15 minutes when two strong breaks by their strong outside centre resulted in the scrum half going over for 2 tries to make the score 0-14 . It seems to take a try of sorts to get burnham into gear and make them start playing rugby which they did and this resulted in some strong forward play by burnham which resulted in bridgwater being reduced to 14 men following the sin binning of their second row for an offence at the break down with piper adding the penalty to take the score to 3-14. But instead of going for it and turning up the pressure on bridgwater burnham allowed them back into the game with 2 more tries one of which shouldnt of been allowed. Following a knock on from bridgys outside centre he scooped it up and went in from 60 metres to score. It was hard to take as the officials apologised for it after having seen it and with it being on the stroke of half time it took the wind out of burnhams sails.
halftime score 3-28

With the halftime teamtalk all about pride and going out to prove we were capable of competing against them burnham started strongly and were camped in bridgwaters 22 where they were rewarded with a try through mike hocking who burrowed his way over and scored yet another to go with his already bulging try tally. piper conv. 10-28

With this in mind burnham got themselves back down in their 22 and were knocking on the try door until an incident which would of seen one of bridgwaters players sin binned turned around and given against burnhams bryan webb for “aggressive rucking” and resulted in him taking 10 mins.
This eventually killed the game for burnham as bridgy ran in 2 more tries to take the score to 10-38.

First of all this was a match of great importance for burnham as 5 years ago they were in somerset one and bridgwater were in national 3 south and any thought of this fixture back then would of resulted in either a 100 pointer to bridgy or the cancellation of the fixture. So the strides burnhams young side have made since then are massive and altough they may only be a league above, bridgwater still are an impressive outfit and have a vast of experience in their side so with the players coming off the pitch knowing they could of been a lot closer and possibly could of won then thats great testament to the work that has been done in getting where they are today.

But now there is more harder and greater work to be done starting with training this week in preperation for their vital league game at home to yatton in what has now become a must win match with both sides lying near the bottom of the table.

Burnham are holding their annual old boys reunion this saturday and any old players or supporters that have been involved with the club over the years are invted down to cheer on the boys. we need as many voices behind us as possible now.
