Saturday 21 Mar saw Burnham host league leaders Wyvern at home in THE BASC Wyvern have been putting it together in their previous games they were also playing for honours even; due to the defeat they suffered at the hands of Burnham on their home ground.
Burnham’s squad was not at full strength due to missing regular players but the squad was enhanced and fielded a considerable number of replacement’s all of whom were to feature in the game. A constructive build up to the game was conducted focused on getting the players to gel into a form of game play.
This completed the official got the game underway; Burnham went  immediately into the attack taking the  game deep into the visitors half and was denied a scoring chance when the ball was turned over on the  Visitors 10 m line enabling them  to mount a counter which they did driving deep into Burnham’s half.
The game ebbed and flowed with both sides gaining and  losing ground the  first  blood was to  be Wyverns where by following a well-executed move by their back  row the  ball was scrambled  over the  try  line resulting in the  visitor’s getting the touch  down.
This  brought about a period of pressure on the  home side who weathered the storm very  well and were very unfortunate to  have had a charged down  clearance kick carried over the  line for their  second score.
Burnham retaliated with some very  good forwards and back  play orchestrated by Will Conway  With Mason Shaw playing a key role in trying to  break into the Wyvern Defence much good  play was thwarted by continuous break down in the  visitors 22 this was indeed very  frustrating for the Burnham side who were deserved of a better pay off than was going for them. This was very much the tale of the half as the official brought the game to a conclusion for the first half; the score line did not reflect the run of play the tries gained by the visitors had been gifted.
The game resumed with a number of changes made and settled down in the same vein as previous; Wyvern were ever dangerous and soon exerted their superiority by crossing the line to add to their score line. Burnham continued to challenge as much of the game was wrestled in the midfield area; it was from a turnover that Will Conway sent the ball deep into Wyverns 22 which was followed up by Ryan Maynard and the Burnham 9 who snatched the high ball and crossed he line under the posts.
This started a period of intense pressure by the home side again let down by the finishing which saw a lot of this concerted effort lost to minor infringements from good try scoring positions. The game was slipping away from the home side but still they maintained the pressure on the visitors; good work was being produced by the pack who were consistent in the scrum Lewis Dodge; Tom Wall ; Sam Weekes; Jake Harding put in stalwart performances in the backs Will Conway Mason Shaw; Elliot Donnelly; Alex Watkins; worked continuously to  break into  the visitors defence the effort finally paid off when Alex Watkins crossed the line.
As the game drew to a close it was unfortunate that a few controversial decisions led to some undisciplined behavior which ended a very good spirited game between the two sides; Burnham can take a lot away from this game taking these lessons learnt into the final games of the season.
A very feisty effort to all who played well done.
Next Saturday Burnham 2s are away to Bridgwater.A big commitment is required for this encounter, we must finish this season on a high.
