Somerton RFC 29 BOS RFC 7
With captain Matt Slater still out through an injury sustained whilst delivering post through some nasty letter boxes, Vice Captain, lee berry, continued his supporting role and led what was thought to be the youngest seconds team in many a year with an average of 22, down to Somerton in the return fixture between the two teams.
Burnham had the upper hand from the first encounter with a 22-0 win and the home team were obviously looking to avenge the visitors.
The game, played in poor conditions, suited the home team who’s somewhat rounder set of forwards used the elements to there advantage against a young set of forwards and set the tone in the scrums. The visitors found themselves being shunted back on several occasions which resulted in the home side scoring within the first 5 mins to give themselves a 7-0 lead.
Burnham were still on the bus at the restart and allowed Somerton to use there bulk in the loose and force the errors. This persistent pressure gave the home team a 17-0 lead at half time.
Captain Berry reshuffled the pack, put himself at No 8, and moved Jon Edwards and Debutant Sam Weeks in to second row, which steadied the scrum throughout the second half.
This change then gave the visitors a platform to work from for quick ball and set the forwards running at pace. The momentum of the game changed and the visitors found themselves in Somertons 22 on numerous occasions but the final execution was let down by poor handling errors.
Berry made one more change and replaced Mark o Regan with Mike Whitfield, who was returning from injury, at inside centre and made an instant impact teaming up with Rob Lewis.
After several phases Burnham were awarded a penalty and kicked for touch. By winning the line out the burnham forwards gained some ground for Mike Nash to whip the ball out to Fly Half, Will Conway, who committed his opposite number and slipped the ball to Whitfield who ran a superb line and hit the gap to score under the post which Conway converted. 17-7.
This did spur the visitors on but persistent handling errors allowed the home side to run in another two tries with one conversion giving a final score on 29-7.
Burnham can walk away from this fixture with there heads held high, despite the loss, with the fact that an average of 22 played against a well drilled and experienced set of forwards.
The seconds are home this Saturday to Wiveliscombe KO at 2.30.
