Burnham’s longest away trip of the season ended with an emphatic win, plus a bonus point, which was extremely welcome in light of ivybridge’s defeat. What can we say about the match, played in abysmal conditions, high winds, rain and for a short period even sleet, but Burnham’s resolve won the day.burnham started against the elements and stuck to their game plan of keeping the play tight, apart from 2 early transgressions which cost them 6 points, rewarded after 12 minutes when Burnham took a quick tap to Blake, who stormed up the middle to within 5metres whereupon recycled ball gave Alan House the chance to force his way over under the posts.Piper adding the extra.6-7.unfortunately Burnham conceded another penalty, slotted over from inside their own half, enabling St.Ives to regain the lead.Burnham then semmed to find another gear and through astute, well controlled play kept St.Ives pinned in their own 22 until a poor kick was pounced upon and whipped down the line, giving Matt Love enough room to race in to the corner.9-12.This was now the pattern,Burnham playing keep ball and St.Jves unable to prevent the inevitable and just before halftime, a long period of Burnham pressure resulted in a 5metre scrum, culminating in the referee awarding a penalty try after St.Ives tried to disrupt Burnham’s progress.9-19.Halftime.The second half was totally spoilt by the ferocity of the elements, allowing St.Ives to keep Burnham at bay by adopting Burnham’s first half tactics until Burnham at last managed to secure the bonus point with a driving maul finished off by Danny Spelman.9-24.Fulltime.A competent  performance by Burnham in atrocious conditions, growing in maturity and authority.Well done Burnham.Burnham’s next match is at home to Devonport Services,4th Jan2014 kickoff 2-30pm.
