The 2s opened their New Year account on 03 Jan at Somerton; they were hopeful to continue in the same mode as they finished 2014.
It was a dreich day for Rugby;wet ;windy and cold. The 2s had mustered a fair squad albeit there were deficiencies in certain positions that were backfilled after a bit of juggling by the skipper Matt Slater.
Somerton have had mixed fortunes in the first part of the season but had put some good scores on certain teams within the league.
Due to other commitments it was not possible to exercise the entire squad in the pre match build up as normal and this phase was piecemeal not a good omen as the 2s perform well after a constructive build up.
The official got the game under way and in the early exchanges Burnham showed the most promise; the Somerton attack when mounted was being suppressed and Burnham ball retention was good; this applied constructive pressure on the home side which saw Burnham come close to two very good scoring attempts; both these spoiled in the final execution. During this early stage two penalties were also missed if these opportunities had been taken the game would have been so different.
Somerton were not idle in these early exchanges ; and executed some good movement with their standoff and centres they were strong runners;this they proved when they ran in a well executed try down the left side of the park. This should have identified the threat to the visitors and brought about a contingency to close this area down. Somerton were on a high and soon added to this try by an almost copycat effort of the previous score.
Burnham rallied to this;they had been in this position before and arrested the deficit. They set about building up an attacking platform brought about by some well drilled moves through the forwards and backs and although their efforts got them into the scoring zone the finishing let them down.
Half time brought about changes due to injury tiny Reese went off replaced by Mike Smith Chris Jones has come on due to prior injury; and certain positions were moved around.
The restart saw the game continue at the same tempo both teams through determined effort created scoring chances alas it was Somerton who were able to take these chances and added to their scoreline.
A determined Burnham were frustrated at not being able to break in; despite consistent attacking pressure in the home sides 22. Further anxiety seeped into the play as discipline broke down on both sides; sometimes at the expense of the official being unable to see what was going on!
In the final play of the game saw Chris Leigh received a bad injury to his shoulder which saw him of to the doc. He had contributed immensely to the game also worthy of mention was Massie Shaw; Alex Watkins; Stuart Blackey; Matt Coles; Ben Bowkett; the accolade could go on; all players contribution was commendable.
The 2s are at home to Morgs 10 Jan; this is a big challenge for the 2s who must avenge the earlier game against this side. A large turnout is required to get this squared away.
