The sun brought out a good crowd to cheer on the home team. The challenge, to take on high flyers Morganians, and to beat an unbeaten team. Morganians success this season has resulted in the ensemble of persons on the sideline being much higher than in previous seasons. Normally one man and his dog. No, one man, as dogs are not allowed at BASC.
Burnham came out of the starting blocks quickly applying early pressure to take them deep into the Morgs 22m line.
Morgs held resolute and against the run of play Morgs intercepted a pass to run in a seven point try. This is some what ironic as in last seasons game with Morgs it was Burnham who had benefitted from an interception try.
Burnham battled their way back into it with some strong running by forwards Ben Stacey and Nick McKen. It was full back Alex Watkins who bagged a brace of tries and converted one out of two to take the score to 12 – 16 at half time.
From here on in Morgs had their tails up and their marauding forwards began to turn the screw. But it was their backs, led by the Tongan General Elisi Vunapola, running some great lines that converted the points.
Burnham never gave up and found great field positions running the ball out wide with the help of centres Scott Havercroft and Tom Chaffey. However the final pass or a fumble resulted in possession not being clinical enough to convert to points.
A thoroughly entertaining intense encounter backed up with the comment by Morgs that it was the hardest game they had played in all season.
Burnham 2’s are away to Martock on Sat 04th March. 14:30 KO.
