Fact: The average age of a combat soldier in the Vietnam War was 19, Fact: the average age of the rugby players travelling to Minehead was 22, including the old boy aged 41 driving the bus!
This is great news for a club looking to maximise its potential this season.
It was this youth, playing to a pattern, coupled with pace that Minehead could not live with.
Burnham started with the intent that they had discussed prior to the game. Not to try and arm wrestle with the larger Minehead pack but to back their own game plan and move the ball away from the pack. The scoring started with Mason Shaw gathering a Minehead kick that saw a combination of passes release winger Ash Tucker. He still had a lot to do, he skinned his opposite number on the outside and rounded the full back to touch down under the posts. Mason Shaw was not to be outdone by his winger and at the next opportunity he a cut a line from a clean delivery from Alex Watkins playing at No. 10 to open up the Minehead backline like a hot knife through butter to score under the posts.
Minehead regrouped and made meters up the pitch using the rolling maul and kicking possession given to them through a period of Burnham ill discipline at the breakdown. However for the whole of the 1st half Burnham’s defence held firm and no points were conceded. Plus they were to extend their lead with two further tries. The third try was preceded by Burnham linking some phase play together and some great offloading that allowed firstly Jake Allen to break through to score. This was followed up shortly by full back Tim James popping up in the back line from a Burnham half break. His fleet of foot left Minehead looking as though they were all stood in quick sand. Alex Watkins converted all four tries to conclude the half. Score 28 -0.
Burnham were not finished and from the kick off Sam Wall gathered and set off, he was stopped, but from the ruck, Alex Watkins released his backs and then linked back up with them to finish his try under the posts. Minehead had other plans to stop the rout. Their pack started to exert some pressure but Burnham continued to repel them time after time. Great defence from all concerned especially the front row of Tom Wall, Rob Leigh and new boy Jamie, a Spanish player who has come to England to travel and play rugby. Welcome aboard ‘Ibiza’.
