Burnham hosted Wadebridge on a perfect practically wind free afternoon at Thè BASC Ground.
Right from the start it was a battle between Burnham’s forwards and the Wadebridge backs. It was Wadebridge who began the match better with their backs confidently running ànd passing the ball and it was the away side who
took thè lead with a penalty after 10 minutes. The Wadebridge backs continued to dominate for most of the first half hour and had it not been for crucial tackles by Jordan Paul, Josh Holder and debutant Lee Vaughan all may have been lost. However it was Wadebridge who scored a try after 38 minutes.
This seemed to spur Burnham into action and started to dominate the set piece and kept the ball in hand with great driving play from No8 Luke Gowan also Adam Peters and Chris Warner punching big holes in the opposition defence.
Despite this unrelenting pressure Wadebridge defended well and hèld onto an 8-0 lead at the break.
At the beginning of the second half Burnham continued to attack and with a great forward drive following a line out Luke Gowan drove over the line only to have thè try disallowed for a knock on.
Burnham stil dominating but despite great driving runs by Alan House, Ross Mckechan and colt Glenn Cutter it was not until the 68th minute when Rich “Kiwi” Muskett charged through to set up
Luke Gowan for à well deserved try . The conversion was missed. 5-8
Burnham continued to press but couldn’t find a way through the Wadebridge defence and completely against the run of play it was the away side who had thè final try after 37 minutes putting the game out of Burnham’s reach. Final score Burnham 5 Wadebridge 13.
A much better all round performance by Burnham who will be rueing what could have been in a match that they could have won.
