An enthralling game played in the best of spirit and competitiveness between old local rivals, which eventually saw Pethy emerge as winners.A good sized crowd, well supported by both clubs, were thoroughly entertained, even if there were a few frayed nerves.A credit to both teams and a sound indictment of Somerset club rugby.Burnham started the game well forcing Pethy back towards their own line and after several successful phases Mike Hocking peeled off and muscled his way over.Piper converted.7-0.Fifteen minutes Pethy entered the scoring after Burnham transgressed,7-3.Back came Burnham and following good lineout retention, forceful driving the ball was whipped out to the backs whereupon Jordan Paul had scooted across from his own wing to score in the opposite corner.12-3.Burnham then unfortunately either side of halftime lost their composure and with two players sinbinned it allowed Pethy the opportunity to firstly score a converted try, with a catch and drive, followed by a penalty to slip into a one point lead.12-13.It took another twenty minutes,or so, before Pethy were able to record another catch and drive try after a penalty lineout,12-18,but in the dying moments after three penalties under the posts,Burnham went wide and Fotu Latu was able to finish the move, which Piper was unable to convert.Game over.A titanic struggle which emphasised the best of rugby’s qualities. This week Burnham are away to Weston Hornets, another local derby, kickoff 2-30pm.
