On Saturday Burnham was happy to welcome St Bernadette’s to the BASC Ground. After a much depleted side had travelled to Bristol earlier in the year and lost, Burnham was now geared up for the return fixture.
The game started with Burnham showing how strong and capable they are. It was quite clear from the start that the Burnham scrum was the more stronger and proved this after the second scrum which had the opposition changing their props to try and handle ours, but even this couldn’t stop the mighty Burnham eight and left them trying some dirty tricks to get the upper hand yet still this didn’t work for them.
Some excellent defence work and with the boys starting to learn from previous games it made it very hard for St Bernadette’s to make any advance on the Burnham try line, some very good tackling from the centres of Rob Lewis and George Scott and not committing so many players to the ruck was the key to this.
It was Burnham who opened the scoring first with some great quick passing which found Rob Lewis and like the true Trojan he is smashed his way through at least three tackles to score. Unconverted.
Early in the game Burnham lost Matt Love off the wing and was perfectly replaced by Phil Hobbs. Some perfectly timed tackles from Hobbs kept St Bernadette’s from making much gain.
It was Burnham who kept the pressure up and resulted in two penalties being awarded within scoring distance. Up stepped Fly Half Dave Harris to coolly slot them home.
Some excellent scrummaging and rucking helped Burnham end the half with the score 11-0.
Burnham began the second half the same as the first and came out ready to put the game to bed. With some great ball carrying from the ever dependable Podge and Caine, some big holes were being made in their defence.
With Burnham camped in the opposition 22 things were looking good until after foolishly giving away 3 quick penalties Burnham soon found themselves stuck on their own 5 metre line which St Bernadette’s took full advantage of after some quick handling through their backs left them scoring in the corner.
Burnham responded excellent to this and kept pushing on and again found themselves in the opposition 22 looking for their second try. After a couple more scrums things got a bit too heated in the scrum which resulted in Prop Slater and his opposite number both being sin binned. With both teams down to 14 players it was Burnham who rose to the challenge and it was Hobbs who was able to score under the posts. Converted by Dave Harris.
The last 10 minutes saw a lot of pressure from St Bernadette’s but Burnham kept their heads and was able to soak up the pressure and eventually St Bernadette’s tired and Burnham re took the possession.
Overall a very good victory for Burnham and shows how well the guys can play together. Training needs to be attended so we can take these positives into next season.
