Burnham-on-Sea 2nd 89-v Castle Cary 0

The Burnham 1st and 2nd teams entertained at home this weekend hosting the annual old boys gets together from the club. This is an eagerly anticipated weekend on the Club calendar, which never fails to draw a big turnout from the old guard along with some of the old faithful’s. The weather conditions were fine and the seconds were playing in a league game. The opposition, Castle Cary, had been a side to watch last season being very competitive in the league. It was an eagerly looked forward to fixture, in the dressing room the seconds were deep in focus. The second team captain for the second week had been asked to step up to the first squad and the responsibility of leading the side fell to Caine Harding the club chairman. He had an impressive array of firepower to choose from. Which included a couple of returning first team players from injury and a clutch of the nucleus of players that had played in the recent games to very good affect.
The  game  kicked  of  and  settled  down  to  one  where  each  team  were  trying  to  dominate  the  loose  and gain territory, it was  obvious  from the onset  that  the  Burnham side had the  tempo  as  they  quickly  dominated  all  aspects  of  the  set  piece  and  the  loose: in the  line  out  Tom Stevens almost  selected  at  random the takes  he  would  have  and  the  forwards exerted their dominance  from the  start. Cary had started light and had two Burnham players on loan that eventually re-adjusted with the exception of Ashley in the front row that went to their assistance due to an injured Cary front row player.
This well motivated Burnham side were soon to be spinning the score board with such regularity that it almost burned out the batteries, tries and conversations came in quick succession from Rob Lewis Mike Whitfield, Tom Hocking, Ollie Streeter and Ben Bowkett playing on the wing; this left Castle Cary stunned and completely awash. The opposition heaved a sigh of relief as the Referee blew for half time with the score at 39-0.

Half time saw substitutions being made the veteran Campaigner Gilly, came on Paul was drafted in the front row with others being warned to warm up, the game restarted.
Burnham resumed with the same attitude as in the first half, it was business as usual and the large crowd were lifted by the Burnham performance; the backs and forwards   linked well, managed ably by Mike Whitfield and Will Conway it was also noted that Mike Whitfield was able to make a couple of very good passes we all look forward to seeing this side of his game develop!! In the backs Rob Lewis, Dan Berry, Ginge and Ben Bowkett were in four-wheel drive as they covered the width of the pitch time and time again.
This continual barrage of pressure began to take its toll the attrition rate was overwhelming Castle Cary in all phases of play, and the tries just kept on coming from Caine Harding, Rob Lewis, Ben Bowkett, Dan Spellman,

These tries would not have been possible had it not been for the committed work of the remainder, Ash Morris, George Scott, Ryan Jones all played outstandingly and are worthy of mention.

Castle Cary must take credit for their perseverance in their attempts to mount counterattacks, which in some instances nearly paid off but Burnham carried the day and they were determined to keep a clean sheet.

The home crowd by the time the final whistle was blown were by this stage in a high state of excitement and left the field exuberant at the fine display of all round flowing rugby that they had been privy to. The after match analysis went on long into the afternoon at the bar.
All players can take away from this performance a sense of a job well done, a lot of what has been tried out over the past few weeks came together on the field; a performance that must be emulated in the next league games. Playing to this prowess, which the seconds are capable of will surly lift them out of this league this season.
