Both Burnham and Cheddar rugby clubs , put out sizeable squads for this early season friendly Derby at the Basc ground. The first quarter  Burnham dominated the game with lots of pressure and within the first few minutes Burnham scored through Nick Mcken, his lineout caught in the air by Ben Stacey which saw him gather the ball at the back of the maul and drive over to give Burnham a 5-0 lead. Burnham’s confidence grew which saw Cheddar make mistakes . Then with 10 minutes in, Burnham’s tight head came off with an injury which saw Matt Slater come on to replace him. Burnham were relentless throughout  giving cheddar lots of problems. In slippery conditions both sides were struggling to keep hold of the ball, Burnham deservedly lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to Nick Mcken’s try early on.
The second quarter saw Burnham really work cheddar and cheddar improve their performance but still not able to get enough chances. Burnham then scored middle in to the 2nd quarter through a fantastic try from Brandon Pettett who  dived over the line to giving Burnham a 10-0 lead. Then late in the quarter cheddar managed to get the ball in Burnham’s half and went over to score when Cheddars fly half drove himself over the five metre line, Cheddar finished the 2nd quarter with a try.
The third quarter saw Cheddar start to give Burnham more of a challenge, with both sides start to pressure each other with some big hits.  Burnham then started to dominate Cheddar again by creating more chances and not long later Tim Piper scored when Nick Mcken’s lineout found Ben Stacey which saw the maul end up in a ruck. Ash Cutter took the ball and charged at the defence which then saw him pop the ball to Tim Piper who went to score over the line.
The last quarter saw Cheddar struggle to get to grips with the ball which saw Burnham score early thanks to Jordan Paul who latched on to the ball from Tim Pipers kick in the corner which Jordan touched down to give Burnham a healthy lead. A great break from Jordan Paul saw him offload the ball to Tim who offloaded to Brandon Pettett who was held at the line, it was liked pinball as Burnham and Cheddar scrapped for the ball which ended up as a penalty try to Burnham. The last minute of the game saw Burnham score again through Adam Peters who ran through the defence inside the twenty-two which saw him score under the posts. It saw Burnham win 30-5. With a massive crowd watching the flood lit match and a huge squad of around 40 players taking turns from the touchline the night looked like it will be leading to an exciting season for both the first and second teams. If you have been inspired by the action in Rio and would like to join a Club with exciting prospects ahead, training for seniors is on Tuesday and Thursdays training for juniors on a Sunday morning starting with under 7’s all
