Burnhams ever improving 2nd team made the short trip up the a38 to play local rivals cheddar in another important test for this young squad of 18, 3 of which were over the age of 25 and another young development player making his debut in Joe Hester who slotted into the back row with ease and made an impressive debut off the bench.
Burnhams game plan was simple and effective playing against an experienced cheddar pack. The plan was to play at as higher tempo as possible to spread them across the park and use our skillfull and pacey back line.
Within the first 5 minutes we opened the scoring with a well worked midfield move off of a scrum which sent ben gibb crashing over under the posts. Tim Piper converted 0-7
With a strong wind at Burnhams backs cheddar were never able to get much territory and from one of their kicks Matt Fear now playing in a new position at hooker caught and carried the ball into contact with quick recycling the ball was picked up by Jake Harding who put piper into the gap who beat a couple of defenders to go into the corner. 0-14
Burnham was producing fine passages of play interlinking with both forwards and backs creating 3 or 4 clear cut chances only to be pulled back for forward passes by the referee.
Then came Burnhams best score of the game which was started by the pain train that is Jaime Safar (ibiza) who was bouncing people off at ease and even at one point lifted a man off the ground with one hand he was finally halted on halfway 2 more phases through Jake Evetts and Tom Wall meant the ball was quickly fed out to Ash Tucker who was caught short of the line but with good support the ball was released to Tom Stevens who skipped over the line to take the half time score to 0-21 piper converted
The half time talk was simple as the opposition brought on fresh experienced players to keep them contained weather what ever storm they threw at us and hit them on the counter as quickly as possible.
Cheddar had their best spell of the game during the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half but with some resolute defending by Ryan Beard Jake Allen (nice haircut) rob leigh Harry Marks and Chris Marsh Burnham kept them out and only conceded penalty in front of the posts which cheddar kicked 3-21
Burnham had chances to score but final passes turnovers and dubious decisions meant they couldn’t get the bonus point try. Fresh legs came on in Felix Grandfield and Tom Boobyer who contributed massively and it was felix who created Burnhams all important 4th try fielding a high kick on his 10 metre line he ran straight back to his opposite number and with quick feet passed him and another to release gibb to go under the posts for our last score of the game 3-28 piper converted.
The game ended for another consecutive bonus point victory.
Big thanks to Sally Flack for assistance on the sidelines and to our flock of travelling supporter’s.
A great effort from our young side who are clicking nicely and with 13 of our 18 man team products of the junior system at some point the future certainly seems bright for the whole club.
Well done lads!!
Next Saturday we travel away to Martock ko 2.30pm
