The 2nd team of 17 men featuring an abundance of the Development Squad travelled to Martock for tough encounter. The score line did not reflect how much effort Martock made to spoil the party especially up front.  The Martock pack had many more pounds to play with and took the game to Burnham. However Burnham soon reversed the pressure and a surging run by Ed ‘Teddy’ Lewis down the blind side led to him being felled short of the line. The resulting knock on allowed Martock to clear their lines.  However it was not long before Burnham were back in the red zone.  A solid scrum machined together in the engine room with a combination of debutant Joe Hester and back from deepest darkest Wales , former captain Jake Evetts, led to clean ball supplied to Tim piper to dummy and go over under the posts. He converted his own try.

From the kick off Burnham were soon back in Martock’s half and they were forced to dab down for kick off from their 22. Chris Marsh collected and a series of great off loads featuring forwards and backs led to flyer Elliot Donelly being released on the other wing. A great cover tackle from his opposite number stopped the score.  Burnham remained camped near Martock’s try line for the remainder of the first half and from a scrum No. 8 Jake Allen picked up and broke loose. He was able to feed a supporting Piper to go over for a converted try. This was soon followed by a bullish run from Matt Fear who made line breaks all afternoon to go over to finish the half with a try.

The 2nd half saw Burnham take their foot off the gas for the first twenty mins and Martock playing to the referee took  the upper hand at the breakdown. A resulting scrum led to a break by their scrum half who forced Burnham to scramble back but they could stop them the Martock maul that followed to go over.

A few words of encouragement by Tim Piper and Burnham lifted their game. The scoreline would have been much higher if the final passes were better as flyers Chris Marsh, Aidan Osman and Brandon Petit started to run surging lines into the Martock half.

Burnham continued to work hard  and the tries came. Scrum half Mike Nash, No. 8 Jake Allen, Loose forward  Ryan Beard all went over as the light faded over the Martock team and their pitch.

The 2’s are  home to Midsommer Norton this weekend . 14:30 Kick Off.
