Burnham travelled to Gloucester only, unfortunately through no fault of their own,to continue their run of bad luck, sustaining further injuries and poor refereeing to lose a game that they could have won.Having played 11 matches Burnham have conceded only 5 points more than they have scored,in fact there are clubs 6 places above with worse records. However,to the match, for once Burnham started like rocket, straight from the start Burnham claimed the ball,2 phases later out to Kiwi to carve a large hole in CHFP’s defence before timing his pass so that Ross Babbington gleefully scored in the corner.0-5.Burnham kept their foot on the pedal and following a lineout, then a scrum, again Kiwi making the initial thrust, picked up by Phil Hobbs, with considerable help from the pack, crashed over to record a try on his return to Burnham.0-12.Welcome back Phil.Disappointingly Burnham could not maintain the pressure,so by halftime CHFP had crept in front,17-12,with 2 tries and a penalty.Burnham reduced the arrears with a penalty early in the second half,17-15,only to allow CHFP to produce a sustained period of attacking to eventually score out wide and convert.24-15.Not to be denied Burnham then put the boot on the other foot and fashioned their own style by keeping the game moving on with a succession of mauls and phases before Kiwi Muskett, with immense help, gained the try line, unfortunately sustaining a hamstring problem, thereby reducing the score to 24-20.Burnham pressed on with their forward advantage and should have been awarded a penalty try after CHFP had conceded 6 penalties,in the red zone, plus a player cynically interupting play, yellow carded, but still the referee refused to award a try and after he blew the final whistle he then admitted he had made a mistake, evenCHFP’s supporters agreed that Burnham should have won the game.Pluses to take on board,Phil Hobbs return, much better scrummaging and hopefully Burnham can maintain this level of performance.Well done Burnham. This week Burnham are at home to league leaders Coney Hill, kickoff 2-30pm.
