So near yet so far as Burnham’s dreams disappeared at Ivybridge, already champions, but they put up a tremendous fight and in doing so forced Ivybridge to concede more points and tries than against any club.Burnham unfortunately found themselves 14 points down after just 4 minutes through firstly allowing Ivybridge’s fullback to swerve and dodge his way in under the posts and secondly producing a pass that was asking to be intercepted.14-0.Many teams would have crumbled but Burnham’s resilience is now a major part of their pysche,so 2 minutes later after being awarded a penalty,Burnham collected the line out, sent Streeter galloping forward, who was brought down short,Burnham recycled the ball to Danny Spelman to crash over.14-5.Ten minutes later Burnham took a penalty scrum from which Stuart Blake picked up from the base and claimed the try.Piper converted.14-12.After much tooing and froing,Burnham were caught offside and Ivybridge kicked the penalty.17-12.On the stroke of halftime Burnham’s superior scrummaging resulted in Stuart Blake’s second try.17-17.Burnham started the second half brightly with Piper kicking a penalty after Ivybridge were caught goin over.17-20.Unfortunately for Burnham Ivybridge then had a purple patch scoring a penalyy goal and three tries in the space of just 13 minutes, moving the score to 37-20.However as we have said many times the game is’nt over till the fat lady sings.Firstly,Burnham at last got their backs moving cohesively allowing Chaffey to power through and then produced an inside switch to Matt Love to show his strength and speed.Piper converted.37-27.Try as they might Burnham instigated attack after attack but Ivybridge held out until at last after four penalties they conceded a penalty try,37-34,but for Burnham time had run out.A supreme and gallant effort at the home of the champions.Burnham are at home for the final game of the season to Ivybridge.3pm kickoff.
