Match Report Burnham 2XV 31- Somerton 13; 08 Mar 14“Burnham’s five try trick spoils Somerton’s trip to the seaside”
Burnham 2s entertained Somerton at BASC on Sat 08 Mar, this was an eagerly looked forward to encounter as the previous game had been a close call for the visitors.
Burnham had again amassed a mighty force to meet Somerton with; a number of players coming in from injury this made up a force of twenty seven players; this provided for a sea of blue on the touchline all twitching to get into contact with the visitors.
The weather had turned favourable for this encounter and the playing surface had fared well with exception; the build-up for this considerable unit went well and the official got the game under way.
From the onset Burnham laid out their stall as to how this game was going to be played and set about attacking Somerton’s defence who were reeling at the cadence of Burnham force that had been unleashed on them; this early onslaught paid off from a break down the wing instrumented by Matt Mitchell at full back supported by Alex Watkins Elliot Donnelly was fed to finish the move which he did crossing the line in style, try unconverted.
From the start Burnham maintained the tempo good ball was recycled from the forwards the backs controlled by Hayden Tuttiet were eagerly awaiting and when fed were crossing the gain line at every attempt, ably supported by the wing forwards; this pressure edged Burnham into the visitors 22 and close to the try line; Somerton’s defence was good but at every breakdown was a sea of blue shirts ready to break in; when it did it came from the scrum half Tuttiet who exploited a gap scoring under the posts; converted by Conway.
The visitors were determined not to let Burnham have all their own way and some impressive crucial tackles were put in by Edwards; Collings; Osgood and Granville in an effort to counter Somerton’s attacks in defence the visitors attack was persistent and eventually paid off as they crossed the line; try; converted.
This breathed new life into the visitors who rallied round to display perhaps their best of the game; again it was Burnham’s dogged defence that kept them at bay in particular Bigwood and Osgood are worthy of special mention for the work rate put in during this period of concentrated pressure, Somerton were to receive some consolation for the effort in the form of a converted penalty.
As the first half came to an end Burnham had regained the upper hand and was again beginning to put it together. Burnham had dominated in the air; a strong point; and were gaining the upper hand in the scrum.
At the restart which saw changes in the form of Reynolds on for injured Matt Mitchell; Lloyd Stewart on for Edwards; Love on for Donnelly; changes at scrum half saw Henry take control. Somerton had clawed themselves back into the game and were keen to capitalise on their gains and started very positively; the home side had another agenda however from a maul mid field the ball was fed to Will Conway who unleashed the backs into the Somerton defence and it was Mason who emerged at pace to catch Somerton flat allowing him to cross the try line; unconverted.
Again Somerton hammered into Burnham in an effort to catch up; and keep the score line within reach this effort was rewarded by a penalty which was converted turning their score board over; this was followed by a composed passage of play which had it not been for a solid defence by Burnham would have let the lead slip again the work load of Osgood; Bigwood; Slater, Stewart; Collings was phenomenal.
Further changes were made with Aldred; Horse Godsen to inject pace and substance into the side; Horse immediately made his presence felt with a considerable impact albeit short lived as he was taken out by injury that hospitalised him over the WE. Smith and Coggins were inserted and as the game moved into the final quarter, Burnham had increased the tempo with the fresh legs this immediately made an impact as James Aldred chased down a through kick through to score under the upright converted by Conway.
There was now no let up for the visitors and Mason appeared again from a link up from Conway; Watkins to score by the post; converted by Conway.
This final move completed this bonspiel of fine running team rugby for Burham. Every player who had taken the field had done himself and the club credit. From this performance it should be apparent to all; just what the second team are capable off in Somerset 2. This commitment and momentum must be maintained to the end of this season.
It was a formidable unit that had squared up for this match; the same unit with the same focus and determination to win is required for the next game away toTaunton on 15 Mar.
Training for those who can make it is a must.
A speedy recovery and best wishes is sent to Horse Godsen; we all know what happens to a Horse when it is off the legs!!
