Burnham gained their 1st away win of the season at beggars Brook and their 1st victory over pethy 2nd team since Gilly Hicks played for them.
Preparations were hampered by late cry offs but nonetheless the lads headed over with 17 including club chairman Chris Jones. Burnham again fielded a backline with an average age of 21 and a starting pack of 25 the future is looking bright especially as 14 of the 17 players all came up through Burnhams junior section.
Burnham started the strongest playing against the wind and slope keeping it tight, direct and at a fast pace powerful runs from Samuel Wall Henry Bigwood Nick Mcken and Mason Shaw enabled Burnham to get into the opposition 5m line resulting in a penalty in front of the post, pethy thinking Burnham would kick switched off and a quick tap by Tim Piper saw him feed mason who in typical fashion smashed his way over. Scott Havercroft converted making it 0-7
From the kick off burnham switched off to let pethy have a penalty in which they kicked to make it 3-7.
Burnham then went up a gear and went for it with some quick phases of play and a superb inside line by Henry saw him slice through before falling short and offloading to piper to make it 3-12
The final score of the half was through a well worked line out maul where Tom Wall touched down Scott kicked it to make the score 3-17 at half time.
10 minutes into the 2nd half the game was forced to move pitch due to a serious neck injury to a pethy player who was taken to hospital and is now recovering well.
The whole 2nd half was about burnhams defence and passion to win. With the conditions in our favour we didn’t manage to get the ball and control the game. With pethys ability to put fresh legs on they started to cut holes in a tiring defence but credit to burnhams young back 3 of Elliot Donnelly Felix Grandfield Andy pike and also Shaun John Abrahams they kept them at bay with some good drift defence. Pethy scored 2 tries in the last 15 minutes to push the lads to the limit but a penalty and turnover allowed Burnham to kick it out and win the game.Great effort from all the lads but as always training is a must to get things right.
We face tor 2nds at home next Saturday.
