Burnham’s young team travelled to face a strengthened Somerton side intent on playing some good rugby.
Skippered by ex-club captain Stuart Blake, Burnham started strongly with the wind behind them. Burnham played well with good shape and punched deep into Somerton territory. Strong running by Jake Fear and Stuart Blake got Burnham over the gain line. This forced Somerton to infringe a number of times. Fly Half Alex Watkins was able to take six points away during the half.  However twice against the run of play Somerton with some direct running broke first up tackles and took their chances converting two tries.
In the second half Somerton got the upper hand at the scrum following a couple of Burnham substitutions due to injury. They tried to dominate, but it was Burnham who pressured Somerton. They bashed and battered their way up close to the line. An effective driving maul sucked in the Somerton defenders only to be collapsed time and time again. However Burnham could not turn their valuable possession into enough points. Flyer Elliot Donnelly finished off a play with an unconverted try following another direct running line from man of the match Ash Tucker.
Rob Leigh was denied as he was held up over the line. However another great performance from him in his first year of playing rugby.
It should also be noted that three player made their debut for Burnham, Toby Fear, brother Jake Fear and Jack Manlow. We look forward to seeing them in a Burnham shirt.
Once against the run of play Somerton using their hard running centres punched through and scored two unconverted tries.
Unfortunately the game could not be closed out due to the fact a Somerton player following a collision with a Burnham player dislocated his knee. The game was stopped and due to the fact 70 mins had passed the result at the time stood. Both clubs demonstrated the spirit the game by giving the ambulance a push off the soft pitch to get them off to hospital. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Burnham 2’s are home to Cheddar Valley on Sat 5th March. 14:30 KO.
