Burnham arrived at St. Austell late after their coach was stuck in heavy traffic causing the start to be delayed by 15 minutes. Despite these setbacks after 20 minutes Burnham found themselves 10 points in the lead with two stunning tries. Firstly Luke Gowan soared to catch the ball in the line out, the ball was fed out to Josh Holder who ran in the try from halfway.
After 25 minutes Burnham won a scrum on halfway and Jordan Paul passed to Matt Love sped down the wing to make it 10-0.
Now St.Austell woke up and a knock on by Burnham gave them a good position. They won the scrum and put the blindside winger in at the corner.
Then five minutes before half-time St.Austell won a line-out 15 metres from the Burnham line after several phases of forward drives their No 8 drove over for the try.
With the tide turning you may have thought Burnham would be happy to go in level at half-time, but Scrum half Sam Lewis had other ideas and when following the restart Ryan Beard and Luke Gowan cleared out a ruck he went through the gap like a flash to score under the posts. Will Conway converted. Half time 10-17
Early in he 2nd half St.Austell were awarded a scrum and took full advantage scoring a cracking try close to the posts that was converted to level the scores.
Soon after St.Austell were awarded a penalty. They kicked it into the corner and from the following line-out drove the ball into the corner for a try. 22-17.
>Burnham then pressured St.Austell for large portions of the second half but we’re let down by their own mistakes with knock ons and having a try disallowed for a forward pass.
It was St.Austell who scored the next try when following a line out their right wing scored in the corner. It was converted to make the score 29-17.
With the game slipping away from them and constantly suffering injuries Burnham could quite easily have crumbled. But struck back when just before the end they were awarded a penalty 10 metres from the opponents line.
Burnham opted to take the scrum and it was Kiwi Muskett who drove over for the try.
Will Conway converted to give Burnham an extra bonus point.
Burnham should be proud of this performance all though they know they could have won the game. Stand out performances Gowan and Ryan Beard in the line out.
Adam Peters whose throwing in was good. Ed Lewis and Chris Warner for a solid base in the scrum. Finally Felix Granfield who made his 1st team debut and made a large impact on and off the pitch.
Final score: St.Austell 29 Burnham on sea 25
