Burnham travelled to Bridgwater last Saturday in a bid to maintain their winning run. Burnham started the game strongly and the forwards led by Jake Allen and Sam Wall bashed up the ball into the opposition 22.
Clean ball was served up to Jordan Paul playing at fly half. It was great to see him back in a Burnham shirt after a long time out with injury.
With a couple of his trademark side steps he ghosted around a couple of players and opened Burnham’s account.
However the afternoon was not going to be finished out in champagne style as the Bridgwater pack had other ideas. They dominated at the scrum and in quick succession drove over two tries.
Burnham rallied, and the quick Burnham back row opened up gaps to release Burnham’s much quicker backs. Brandon Petit released winger Aidan Osman who made in roads close to the Bridgwater line. Efficient recycling allowed Jordan Paul to round is opposite number and go over again. 12 – 10 at half time.
The second half mirrored the first in terms of a big Bridgwater pack that got bigger as they bought on reinforcements dominating the set piece versus Burnham’s fleet of foot all over the Bridgwater 1st team pitch. Bridgwater drove up the middle with a rolling maul to find themselves close to the line. It just required a pick and go to crash over. Burnham came back and an infringement at the breakdown by Bridgwater allowed Joe Hester to take a quick tap just outside the Bridgwater 22, breaking two tackles he offloaded to a flying No. 8 Jake Allen to go over. Jordan Paul converted the try.
However Bridgwater continued to rack up the points as they found that even with the added weight of Andy Fear and Andy Barrington they could boss the scrum. Yet Burnham would not just lie down and some courageous tackling led by No. 6 Ben O’Halloran chopped down the Bridgwater players as they came wave after wave. It was this defiance that spurred Burnham to get another score and on the end of a break by No. 7 Ryan Beard was man of the match Ben O’ Halloran.
This weekend will see another stiff test as Burnham take on unbeaten side Hornets 3’s. 14:15 kick off.
