A fantastic contest between two teams in the top three of Somerset Two South played out at the BASC ground. Burnham once again selected a youthful side with the majority of the players taking to the field  all rising through the ranks of Burnham’s succesful junior section.
Both teams started with confidence and it was soon obvious a close tense game was on show for the home crowd. Playing away from the clubhouse Burnham took the game to Hornets,  with Tim Piper soon releasing his centres Mason Shaw and Harry Marks. The play was snuffed out by Hornets and from a knock on Hornets took the first scrum. Burnham were not ready for the intensity of the scrum and were unceremoniously crumpled. The Burnham pack dusted themselves off and reset. This time they were  much firmer however did find themselves retreating. This was the tale of the afternoon. Hornets played to their strengths and were able to dominate the set piece of scrum and line out. They also had a very effective maul and from a scrum they scored a push over try and from a rampant maul a converted try.  Burnham on the other hand competed well at the breakdown and played far more attractive rugby taking their chances to put width on the ball. However they were unable to break through to cross the line and had to settle for a solitary penalty kick. A monumental effort but no cigar!
This game concluded a successful first half to the season and a solid foundation to take on the second half. Burnham 2’s travel to Winscombe on 02/01/16
