An exciting weekend of rugby was eagerly anticipated in the hallow avenues of Burnham on sea. The word was on the street that both sides were playing at home. The old guard were pressing their club ties ands shining their shoes in anticipation for the feast of rugby that was set for the playing fields of the BASC grounds.
There was an air of silent determination experienced in the 2nd XV dressing room. Bitterly disappointed from the last three games it was unilaterally felt that enough was enough and it was time to make amends.
The stage was set, on the home patch this would be an ideal opportunity against the background of a packed house of fanatical home support; amends would be made. Morale was high made even better due to the fact that a near full house of 2nd team players had turned to.
Tor were the opposition they had successfully seen of Minehead barbarians in the previous week it was apparent that they fully intended to add Burnham to their list of conquests, they were confident and determined this was obvious from the pagan rituals that were being practised on the training pitch.
After the talk from the referee who looked splendid in his Pink Strip the game kicked off. From the start it was apparent that the strength of Tor was in a very well drilled forward unit with a few potentially dangerous backs. The Burnham skipper Matt Slater had already identified this factor and he had issued his game plan. Tor attacked right from the start firing on all cylinders, this put Burnham on the back foot momentarily. It was obvious that Tor meant business and that they intended to dictate just how Burnham was to spend the next 80 Minutes.
This domination continued with Burnham soaking up the pressure and trying hard to put moves together to take the game to Tor. Tors pressure paid off and they were rewarded with a try unconverted; Burnham 5 nil down. Detailed analysis of what had happened was hurriedly carried out and the game continued. Burnham were now more composed, they began to get back into the game, in a slip of concentration Tor scored again it was controversial but was given; unconverted; Burnham 10 nil down. The Burnham players steeled themselves and determined to overcome got back into the fray. It was noticeable at this stage that the Burnham side were beginning to make ground mainly due to the commitment of the players who were getting to the breakdown quicker, the side was beginning to gel and was paying off although this was held up at times by bad handling errors. The hard work paid of with a very well taken try by Bryan Webb making a guest appearance in a 2nd team shirt, great try sweet conversation by Dave Harris. Score 10-7 into half time.
Substitutions were made at half time and the game commenced. Tor resumed as they had started and the substitutions had to adapt to the tempo of the game fast, they did and began to assert themselves. As was expected the heavier Tor forwards soon found themselves fighting in the trenches as the more mobile Burnham side exerted more dominance in the game, never the less Tor remained a threat but things were now going Burhams way. A try and a conversion from the Stand off Dave Harris added some breathing space, which was quickly followed up by a solo run to the Line By the Stand off only to drop the ball in the process of a touch down. Keen to make amends and silence the Braying support Dave emulated his last effort this time scoring, obviously flushed with success his conversion attempt struck the up right. Burnham was now on top.
A further substitution took place that was the maximum that is authorised in the form of Nigel White. Into the pack. His contribution was immediately felt by his piercing deep runs into the Tor forwards who by this stage were almost in full retreat. This combined with the pick a go and successful link up in the backs drew Burnham to Tor’s line time and time again. This eventually paid off when the forwards dominated pack on pack and drove Tor back with a very well grabbed try from the Scrum half Mike Edwards. This was converted by Dave Harris and saw what had been a very entertaining game come to an end. Burnham24-10
Burnham had demonstrated that this game had been won by a combination of players and Subs, which made the winning formula. Every player, had made a handsome contribution, Grant had made some fantastic individual runs Chris Jones’s work rate was awesome, Sam Vigar back from injury took over the work load from Chris and ran Tor ragged.
This win demonstrated the character of the squad and was extremely well deserved. The turn out was most impressive, all are requested to make themselves available in the same numbers every week. Next Sat 06 Nov is a free weekend next game is away to Castle Cary 13 Nov.
