A home game this week for Will Conway’s team. A full compliment and a couple of new faces were welcomed to the team. Burnham opted to play away from the club house in the first half and took the game to the visitors. Some early linking play from the forwards led to Matt Fear, playing at hooker this week crashing over for Will Conway to convert. The front row trio of Matt Fear, Chris Leigh and Ed Lewis provided good service at the scrum and all afternoon they made the gain line time after time for Conway’s Crusaders.
However they were not to have it all their own way, as the Wiveliscombe team played their way back into the game. Some strong running and some weak tackles saw one of the centres go under the posts. A second try soon followed when their pacy winger finishing in the corner.
Burnham realised this was not going to be a one way contest and upped their game. Following a clean take at the line out by Tom Stevens, returning to a Burnham shirt following injury, the ball was shipped to Conway who broke the line to convert his own try.
He repeated this just before half time but could not convert. 19 – 14 half time.
A number of changes at the break by Burnham saw Scott Havercroft making his debut for a Burnham senior team . However the play was going to be led by Wiveliscombe and they scored twice in succession. With the game in the balance a reshuffle of the team saw the pendulum swing back to Burnham and again it was the front row trio who led the way. Firstly Chris Leigh crashed over following a penalty awarded to Burnham. Ed Lewis took the game to the opposition and linked well with Matt Fear allowing Captain Conway to finish out the game. Well done Burnham.
The next game is away to Frome 3’s on 10th October.
