Burnham started confidently and the early pressure close to the Wells line forced a penalty. This was converted into points by Burnham skipper Will Conway. However this seemed to spirit Wells into action and down the slope came wave after wave of attack. This led to some great defence by Burnham notably some big tackles by Matt Bonnell, returning to a Burnham shirt whilst home for a while from Australia.
However with the Wells forwards becoming dominant Burnham could not stem the tide and their scrum half scampered over.
The remainder of the 1st half saw the Wells forwards become more dominant in the set piece and carrying the ball forward and again Burnham conceded a converted try. However when ever the ball was retained by Burnham and fed to Mason Shaw crucial yards were made. His opposite number could not contain his fend. Pace vs strength. A true sporting contest played out. However Burnham could not capitalise on this and conceded another converted try. 19 – 3 at the break.
It was also good to see ex 2nd team skipper Jake Evetts back for one game only. However a knock to the ribs sidelined Jake at half time. This resulted in uncontested scrums in the second half. This suited Burnham and they were able to retain more possession. With George Scott securing line out ball this allowed the backs into the game. Harry Marks made good yards each time he carried.
However it was a kick and chase by debutant Development Squad player Felix Grandfield playing at full back that started a phase of attack play. This released Elliot Donnelly to use his pace to finish in the corner. However as Burnham tired Wells finished the game out with a converted try.
Next week Burnham are home to Wiveliscombe 2pm Kick Off.
