Burnham resumed their season after a four week layoff with an emphatic win and by doing so ,not only gaining sweet revenge for their defeat in Plymouth but more importantly leapfrogging their opponents to record their highest position in Western Counties rugby, sixth place. This however was no pushover and therefore required all of Burnham’s tenacity, skill and eventually superior fitness. For the first twenty five minutes Devonport kept Burnham at bay and it took a smart piece of thinking by Bryan Webb to seize the opportunity by taking a quick tap, running straight and hard at the defence before brushing aside the last man to score under the posts.chillingworth adding the extra.7-0.Five minutes later Vunipola grabbed the iniatative, also taking a quick tap, finding his two midfield partners,Piper and Muskett, who deftly exchanged passes before releasing Sam Chillingworth to round his man and score under the posts.14-0.Just before Halftime Burnham conceded a penalty allowing Devonport a sliver of hope.14-3.From the restart neither side could gain any advantage until after twenty minutes Piper fielded a speculative kick, launched Paul to link up with the pack and after a series offloads found Watts who dummied well enough to create a space for Mike Hocking to dive over.21-3.From this moment on Burnham realised that they were gaining the upperhand and were able to exert considerable pressure in all phases and after a period of play that appeared to involve almost everybody,Burnham yet again supplied simple ball for Piper to slip a neat reverse pass for Sam Coles to complete the move.28-3.A few minutes later Burnham stole possession from a maul to set up another passage of play involving many players before eventually finding Tim Piper, who shrugged off a tackle and strolled over.Vunipola converted.35-3.Burnham kept their foot on the pedaland opted for a scrum after a penalty and from five metres drove Devonport back to record a pushover try with Stuart Blake gleefully accepting the reward.Burnham still had one more trick in their locker, straight from the kickoff Gowan called and caught, set up a ruck to release Piper who combined with Muskett and Bowkett before another swift exchange of passes sent Richard Muskett in at the corner.45-3.All credit must be given to Devonport for not throwing in the towel and after a poor clearance by Burnham they had sufficient men on the charge to cross the line. 45-10. An extremely satisfying result for and hopefully this will give them a platform to maintain their impetus towards a top five place.Well done Burnham. This week Burnham travel down to Exeter Saracens.Kickoff 2-30pm.
