Burnham entertained Kingsbridge in what can only be described as a good old fashioned tussle with both giving their all to maintain their current status.Burnham to stay in the top six and Kingsbridge to keep striving for possible promotion. Both teams asked and neither gave any quarter, thereby ensuring that the faithful supporters,on both sides, were treated to an enthralling game and as the saying goes,it takes two to tango.Burnham started well and after being awarded a penalty close to the Kingsbridge line they chose to take the scrum, provided quality ball for skipper Stuart Blake to pick up and use his pace and power to drive over.5-0.But make no mistake,Kingsbridge are not third in the table for nothing, forcing Burnham to concede penalties until eventually Kingsbridge decided that points on the board were sufficient reward for their pressure.5-3.Shortly after the ball squirted awkwardly out of the side of a scrum, picked up by Kingsbridge’s left winger who set off on a mazy, speedy run,set up a ruck enabling Kingsbridge to go wide and score in the corner.5-8.Back came Burnham and after Rees won clean ball in the line,Tuttiet whipped it out to Elisi Vunipola who then swiftly looped with Muskett before showing his internatioal pedigree and ghosted through the gaps that he created.Chillingworth converted.12-8.What a try!,inspiring Burnham to raise their game with Vunipola again being the instigator, astutely kicking ahead, judging the bounce perfectly, racing up the middle before setting up the ruck, followed py three more successful phases until Burnham released Ollie Streeter to crash through and over from a few metres out. 19-8. At this point the spectators could have been forgiven if they thought that Kingsbridge would fold under the pressure but not so.Just before halftime Kingsbridge caught Burnham offside and took the points.19-11.Five minutes into the second half Kingsbridge were awarded a penalty, took a quick tap, creating enough space to fashion an overlap to score in the corner.19-16.This set up a period of end to end play with Burnham finally gaining a penalty close enough for Chillingworth to duly oblige.22-16.Kingsbridge’s reply was to storm back and lay siege to Burnham’s line and after a series of penalties they gathered enough momentum to cross the line.22-21.What a nailbiting finish to savour and with still 15 minutes to go Burnham decided that the best way to seal victory was to prevent Kingsbridge from gaining possession, which they managed to do and when the referee called final play,Burnham controlled their own scrum allowing Vunipola to gratefully boot it in touch.Fantastic match, not necessarily for the quality of rugby, which was good, but for the commitment and never say die attitude from both teams.Well done both clubs.Burnham showed, yet again, when they have to stand up and be counted they have the capacity and the will to perform, both in attack and defense, backs and forwards. This Saturday Burnham travel to Newquay kickoff 2-30pm.Transport arranged so if you want a good day out, come and watch.
