Hot weather, hot rugby.Burnham’s pace and power in the backs matched the elements in producing some inspirational rugby, showing yet again that they have the skill level to compete with anyone.Within two minutes from the start Burnham’s early pressure forced Whitehall into conceding a penalty, quick tap to Vunipola, out to Tim Piper to dummy and cross the line.5-0.Shortly afterwards Whitehall again transgressed.8-0.Burnham kept up the early pressure and good retention gave Kiwi Muskett the opportunity to ghost through the gap.15-0.Unfortunately that was the last we saw of Muskett as he suffered a recurring hamstring injury.Nevertheless Burnham carried on in the same mode and this time Mike Hocking was the recipient.22-0.Further relentless pressure forced Whitehall into a poor clearing kick, caught by Jordan Paul, who then demonstrated to shimmy between two players and then race away and score in the corner.27-0.From the restart Gowan called for and caught the kickoff from which the resulting play forced Whitehall into give away the lineout, successfully taken by the forwards, out to Russell Pike to show that he too was strong, agile and swift enough to beat several players before scoring under the posts.34-0.But all credit to Whitehall they decided to try and play a tight game and were rew2arded on the stroke of halftime with a rolling maul that enabled them to breach Burnham’s line.34-7.The second half started with Whitehall continuing in the same vein driving over from a 5 metre scrum.34-12.Burnham’s response was to hit straight back and after many phases the ball was whipped out to Piper to glide and slide his way through.39-12.Gowan,maturing with every game, took the restart, set it up,out to Vunipola, whose long pass found Paul, who then proceeded to weave and wriggle his way through from 70 metres.46-12.Shortly after Burnham’s pack secured solid possession, out to Piper to show and go to complete his hattrick.53-12.Whitehall,however were not finished, firstly pressurising Burnham’s scruminto losing control and pouncing on the loose ball,53-17,and then returning a Burnham kick to score in the corner.53-22.Burnham did manage to have the last word when Whitehall were penalised for not releasing, quick tap out to Vunipola on to Bobby Hewlett to round his man and score on his debut. 58-22. An exhilarating match with 13 tries,a credit to both teams in such hot conditions.Plus points for Burnham were, more cohesion in the back line enabling Piper and Paul to demonstrate their skills and ability to exploit the slightest chink in the opposition armour, willingness from all the team to compete in all areas and the stamina to back it up. Well done Burnham.
