Burnham continued with the run of form that saw them through all their warm up games and with the younger players, eight of which are 21 and younger, now having that knowledge and experience of two years at this level, meant that they hit the ground running.Solid srummaging, dominant own lineout ball, effective defence and the ability to attack from anywhere on the park proved too much for Yatton, who played in the league above last season.Skipper Blake, whilst being pleased with the win, said that there was still room for considerable improvement and there will be harder tests to come.
Burnham exerted all the early pressure and were rewarded after just five minutes.Cooper slotted a neat penalty to within 10 metres allowing Blake to show his remarkable ability to secure possession, set up the drive, great control eventually leading to Bryan Webb to claim the try.5-0.Five minutes later Yatton transgressed,Piper penalty.8-0.Yatton came back and were rewarded with a long range penalty goal.8-3.For the next 25 minutes neither side could find a way through until Yatton were caught offside and from the resulting penalty Burnham produced a carbon copy of the first try,Bryan Webb again.13-3.Half time.
Fifteen minutes into the second half Vunipola brought himself,Streeter and McKeechan off the bench and almost immediately the pace stepped up a gear and after good work by the forwards securing three successful phases Piper was able to find a gap before drawing the defence and then releasing Webb to record his hat-trick in the corner.18-3.A few minutes later came the try of the match, tidy lineout to House, down to Tuttiet,to Vunipola producing a double miss to Muskett,on to Piper, back inside to Muskett to send Webb in for his fourth try. 23-3. As the game was drawing to a conclusion,Burnham conceded two successive penalties allow ing to take a quick tap, down the line for the winger to score in the corner.23-8.However not to be outdone,Burnham responded by forcing Yatton to concede two penalties and by securing both retention and possession Hayden Tuttiet was able to spot the gap and scoot in under the posts,Piper at last converting. 30-8.Final score.Solid performance showing that there is a lot to come from this team and the more they play together, their confidence and skill levels will improve.Well done Burnham.
