Burnham enjoyed an outing to South Devon, along with their faithful following,to tackle a team that were undefeated at homeand riding high in the league table. However they obviously had not yet met a team of Burnham’s quality or tenacity.Burnham showed that it isn’t just about scoring tries but also making sure that the opposition don’t and with every single player standing up to be counted. It also helps if you have a set of forwards who can dominate the set piece and control the breakdown and Burnham certainly proved that they are a match for anybody in those areas, but to be perfectly fair it takes two teams to make an exciting, hard fought and committed game of rugby and that was what the hoi polloi were treated to.For the first 25 minutes both sides hammered away at each other until Burnham were caught offside.3-0.Six minutes later after six successful phases Burnham sent the ball wide so that Sam Chillingworth was able to squeeze through two defenders and reach for the line.3-5.From then on Burnham kept up continuous pressure but it was almost an hour before Kingsbridge transgressed by crossing within range of Chillingworth’s boot.3-8.Final score.Burnham were also unlucky not to be awarded a try when Nick McKen crossed the line only for the referee to declare he was held up,poor decision. This was much more emphatic than the scoreline suggests and should Burnham continue to play in this fashion then they will upset a lot of teams.Coach Vunipola said”I know we can produce this type of rugby, what we must do is be consistent”This week Burnham entertain Newquay in what they hope will be their biggest crowd of the season as they host their Old Boy’s Reunion.Kickoff 3pm. Be there!!!.
