Burnham were brought back down to earth after a lacklustre performance against their old rivals.Following on from two scintillating efforts Burnham’s game plan failed against a side that obviously wanted to win more than Burnham.Slow ball, indiscipline and, unusually for Burnham, indifferent scrummaging allowed Petherton to gain the upper hand at crucial times. For the first 25 minutes no real advantage to either side until a poor clearing penalty kick byBurnham was gathered and run back, recycle for outside centre to score for Pethy in the corner.5-0.Two minutes later Pethy transgressed in front of the posts.5-3.On the stroke of halftime Pethy won a scrum against the head enabling Pethy’s No.8 to go blind and bulldoze over.10-3.From the restart Burnham pressurised Pethy’s defence so much so that the referee sinbinned Pethy’s lock forward and from the resulting penalty,Burnham opting for a scrum,Stuart blake was able to touch down from the pushover.10-10.Burnham’s misdemeanours then cost them six points before they showed that when they want to they can produce the goods with a well controlled catch and drive for Ollie Streeter to claim the try.16-17.However Pethy were not to be denied and after again taking a strike against the head, swift passing created enough room for their outside centre to score under the posts 23-17.Try as they might Burnham were unable to create the scoring opportunity they needed and Pethy ran out deserved winners.Burnham must learn that if they wish to challenge for honours their level of intensity has to be constant not spasmodic.Burnham are at home this Saturday to Okehampton ko 3pm
