On a dry Saturday afternoon Burnham stags welcomed Tavistock to the pit, unfortunately for Tavistock the welcome came in the form of what can only be described as at times “champagne” rugby!
After once again being set to purpose by coaches Graham Buller and Elisi Vunipola Burnham proved that this club can produce some excellent rugby. This week the stags set to the task with only two players on the bench, the squad being 1.Coles 2.Hocking 3.Streeter 4.Mckechan 5.House 6.Mcken 7.Fear 8.Blake 9.Tuttiett 10.Piper 11.Love 12.Muskett 13.Holder 14.Pike(c) 15.Chaffey 16.Scott 17.Osgood. Captain Pike and vice captain Hocking made sure the lads were aware that Burnham needed to get off to a quick start and the boys did not disappoint. Burnham had the honours of the kick off and after instant pressure from the defensive line Tavistock were forced into an early error and Burnham stags were awarded a scrum on the halfway line, what followed was shear powerful dominance from stags pack which Tavistock could not handle for the whole 80 mins and referee Tony Spreadbury had no choice but to award a penalty which stags kicked for the corner. The following line out was secured by Ross Mckechan and the rest of the pack formed up and sent Tavistock reeling backwards for Mckechan to score in the corner, a great start and this was to set the tone for the rest of the match.
With the fire alight stags back row of Blake Fear and Mckechan set to doing the unseen work and making a nuisance of them selves and were awarded with another penalty which Piper put away, 8-0 and the best yet to come.
The next score started from an ever solid scrum from Coles Hocking and Streeter which gave No.8 Blake an easy pick up to go to the blind side, draw in one player to offload to the ever elusive Tuttiett who dummied and stepped and unleashed Pike down the wing to beat two defenders and in return pass back inside to Tuttiett to power over the line for a great score.
Tavistock did not simply roll over and fought back with some hard running but some solid defence from Muskett Holder Piper Love and Chaffey meant there was no way through, with all this pressure Tavistock were forced into more errors and the following play saw Mckechan gather the ball in the loose and gracefully side step his way through the WHOLE defence line for a great individual try under the posts which was converted 20-0.
Before the half time break the unbelievable was achieved and Mckechan found himself once again in possession of the ball with the brutal stags pack in front of him to go over for his hat trick, 25-0 at the break!
As the second half kicked off Tavistock started strong but the stags were now rutting and there was no way they were letting anything through, more powerful runs from House Muskett Hocking and Fear saw Burnham with an attacking scrum 5 meters out in front of the posts, the pressure that was put on Tavi was too much and the ref had no other decision but to award a penalty try, try converted 32-0.
Stags now could smell blood and the next score rivalled Tuttietts, with some more unstoppable work from the pack, Piper set off and released Muskett who beat almost the whole Tavi back line with side steps and big fends to cross the line under the posts, try converted.
To wrap up the day it was “Tower” Oliver Streeter to out pace the defence and smash over the line in the corner after some great attacking from a ever improving Burnham side, Piper converted to make the final score 46-0! Man of the match was awarded to Ross Mckechan for proving his worth in defence and picking up a hat trick. Another good performance but still a lot to work on at training! Next 1st team game is the 12/10/13 at the pit, 2nd team welcome Cheddar at home this Saturday the 5th, 1500 Kick off #UTP
